To help you understand how your project will progress, we have detailed a brief synopsis of each stage of the design process that you could typically expect for the average project.  If you would like to discuss any of the stages in further detail, drop us an email (details can be found at the bottom of each page) or why not give us a call?

The information from the measured survey is translated into a technical drawing indicating the proposals based on your initial Client Brief and will show the relationship of your project with the surrounding area. These drawings are typically produced in a 2D format providing sufficient information that can be used for planning applications, certificate of lawfulness applications and other similar applications. Contour Architectural Designs will generally submit all applications to the relevant Local Authorities on your behalf and will liaise with the Local Authority throughout the each part of the application process.

As an architectural design practice we ensure that our staff are always up to date with the latest planning and permitted development legislation in order to accurately advise you on the feasibility of your chosen project and any restrictions or limitations that we feel may be relevant.

Contour Architectural Designs will then take the information from the measured survey and the planning drawings and translate these into detailed sections and plans giving specifications for the proposed method of construction, identifying all relevant components of the project's construction. To clarify, these are not full tender drawings that you would take to your chosen building contractor rather are strictly for the purpose of obtaining a Building Regulation approval from your Local Authority. During the stage and depending on the specifics of the project needs, external consultants may be required to provide additional information; for example, new dwellings required thermal heat loss calculations to prove compliance with the British Building Regulations Approved Document Part L1A; however again this will be discussed with you during the initial Client Brief and subsequent stages.

If you are having trouble visualising the finished design from the 2D planning drawings, then Contour Architectural Designs can provide 3D artists impressions and flythrough videos of the proposals so you can see and fully appreciate the project on completion. Again this can be discussed during the initial Client Brief and will enable you to fully contemplate the works before committing to the project construction costs.

Structural design calculations are required in many projects where alterations or new proposals require the services of a structural engineer. This may include and is not limited to; foundation design, wall construction details in a flood event, roof design giving details of roof member sizes etc. The design team at Contour Architectural Designs will be happy to assist where these calculations are necessary for your chosen project.
